    Thanks for a CVS Newbie 101 -
I’ve been wanting to participate, but didn’t quite know where to start!

So… Am I understanding this correctly? To get the L’Oreal product, which I would like to have, for $3.99, I have to buy two things that I don’t want? And that nobody I know would want? Or actually, I have to have bought the two unwanted things plus a couple of things the prior week?

It’s an interesting idea. But — to play the Devil’s advocate — it seems like you’d end up with a lot of stuff you’re unlikely to use, which you’d either have to give away as dubious “presents” or try to unload in yard sales. If you yard-saled the body wash & the hair goop, you probably could get 50 cents apiece, for a dollar. So your cost for transaction #1, not counting whatever you spent the previous week, is $1.77. Wouldn’t you have to add that to the $3.99 cost of the L’Oreal to arrive at what the L’Oreal product actually costs you? That would give you $5.76, plus whatever you paid the previous week, as the actual cost of the L’Oreal.

If your previous week’s purchase was something you would use, that still would be a bargain…as long as you don’t attach any value to your time. Assuming you like this brand of body wash and heavy-duty hair goop and so will use it, you’ve spent $2.77 (OOP for the St. Ives & the LA Looks) and $3.99 (OOP for the L’Oreal). Since you HAVE to spend the $2.77 to get the $3.99 price (and can’t defer the first purchase until you actually need those products), you could argue that the actual cost of the L’Oreal (not counting the prior week’s purchase or the value of your time) is $2.77 + $3.99, or $6.76. Still…not at all bad, compared to what I pay for the stuff at Costco.

Dawn~I am glad that you found the article helpful!

vh~I see your point, however, the transactions I posted were the ones that I planned on doing based on my family’s needs and wants. I don’t buy any items that I don’t plan on using myself. Shopping at CVS is a personal choice, I enjoy it, but it’s not for everyone!

I suppose it’s all about spotting the bargains and then opting for those gifts that bring you a good return on your spending. I still prefer cash back sites personally.
