Weekend Garage Sale

by Anna on May 27, 2008

Each year over Memorial Day Weekend the town I live in holds a Townwide garage sale.  I’ve participated once before, about two years ago, and had a very successful garage sale even though it was cold and rainy.

This year I waivered back and forth.  I didn’t feel ready to have a garage sale, but at the same time I had been slowly collecting stuff to sell.  Two of my friends were participating for one day of the townwide sale and asked me to join in with them.  At the very last minute, literally, I decided I’d bring my stuff up to the house they were holding the sale at.

Normally I would’ve have been very particular about the items I was selling.  I’d have individually priced them all and created a spreadsheet listing every item in detail and price and then checked each off as it sold.

Not this time.  I had all shirts one price, all pants one price, etc.  We didn’t divide our belongings that we were selling at all.  It was all grouped together.  We had decided ahead of time that we’d split the profits three ways, with the exception of big ticket items.  The big items (over $10) we would get the money for ourselves.  I had no big items due to my late entry, so this didn’t apply to me.

At the end of an 8 hour day of garage sale-ing, we made about $400 total.  My one friend had gotten $100 worth of change for the day, so that went right back to her.  That left $300 to be divided among us, since the big item sales hadn’t been placed into our profit tin.  So, after a last minute decision to sell some items and 8 hours of sales later, I made $100 snowflake.

All the items that didn’t sell went straight to the local Goodwill store.  It feels so great to have all of that stuff out of my life!
